Oliver and the New School

Sample story

Oliver stands at the bottom of the stone steps, backpack straps tight in his fists, and stares up at the words carved above the entrance: HILLTOP ACADEMY. The morning sun throws long golden shadows across the courtyard, and somewhere beyond the heavy double doors, hundreds of voices hum like a beehive waking up. His stomach flips. Everything smells like fresh paint and old library books at the same time. "You've got this," he whispers to himself, and pushes through the doors. The hallway explodes with color — bright murals of planets and rainforests stretch across every wall. Lockers clang. Sneakers squeak against polished floors. A girl with paint-smudged fingers rushes past, nearly knocking his elbow, and shouts "Sorry!" without slowing down. Oliver glances at his schedule. Room 14B — Science Lab. His heart beats a little faster, but this time it isn't fear. It's something else. Something warmer. He turns the corner and spots a boy standing alone by a classroom door, holding a crumpled map and frowning at it like it's written in code. Oliver takes a breath. "Hey — need help finding your way? I'm pretty good at figuring things out." The boy looks up and grins...
