Amelia and the Magic Forest

Sample story

The forest is whispering, and Amelia is sure it's whispering her name. She stands at the edge of a trail she has never seen before — a narrow path winding between towering oaks draped in emerald moss. Sunlight filters through the canopy in golden ribbons, and the air smells of damp earth and wild berries. Somewhere deep among the trees, a stream gurgles like a secret being told. Amelia takes one step. Then another. Twigs snap softly beneath her boots. A bluebird darts overhead, and she follows it with her eyes until it vanishes into the shadows ahead. That's when she hears it — a tiny, trembling cry. She pushes through a curtain of ferns and gasps. There, rising from the forest floor like something out of a dream, stands a tree unlike any she has ever seen. Its bark shimmers and shifts, and carved into its trunk are drawings that move — a deer leaping, a river flowing, stars spinning in slow circles. At the base of the tree, curled into a shivering ball of russet fur, sits a fox cub with wide, frightened eyes — staring right at her.
