Hudson and the Library

Sample story

The library is quiet. Almost too quiet. Hudson runs his fingers along the spines of the books on the third shelf — the one with the golden sticker that says "Adventure" — when he hears it. A tiny voice, no louder than a whisper, calling his name. "Hudson! Down here!" He crouches low and peers between two thick picture books. A small figure, no bigger than his thumb, stands on the edge of a page that glows warm orange, like a sunset trapped in paper. It's a knight — but her armor is cracked, and her sword is missing its blade. "My story is unfinished," she says, her voice trembling. "The last chapter has gone blank. If no one reads it, I'll disappear." Hudson's heart pounds. The air around him smells of old paper and cinnamon, and the library lights flicker once, twice. Behind the knight, the page ripples like water, and Hudson can see a castle crumbling in the distance, its towers dissolving into white emptiness. He reaches out his hand. The page feels warm beneath his fingertips, and then — the library tilts, the shelves blur, and Hudson feels himself falling straight into the story...
